Italy’s scenic touring landscape ranges from the Italian Lakes (Como, Maggiore, Garda) and the Dolomites in the north, to the Amalfi Coast and Cilento in the south, the hill country of Tuscany and Umbria, and coastal Sardinia and Sicily. Our scenic journey tours are organised around landscapes and travel modes rather than a city-by-city itinerary — though most include historic towns and villages along the route. The defining feature is that the journey itself is curated, not just the stops.
Scenic journeys use a range of transport depending on the landscape: private coach, lake ferries, local trains, cable cars, and walking. Some itineraries combine multiple modes to show you a region from different angles. We’ll always tell you clearly how each tour moves, so you can choose one that suits your comfort and travel preferences.
The physical demands vary quite a bit between itineraries. Some scenic tours are vehicle- and boat-based with minimal walking; others involve proper walking days between villages. Most fall somewhere between those two. Individual tour pages include a clear grading — if you’re not sure which suits you, just ask.
Each region has its sweet spot. The Italian Lakes are lovely from April through October, with spring blossom and autumn colour as particular highlights. The Dolomites are best from June to September for walking. The Amalfi Coast is best avoided in July and August; May, June, and September are the comfortable months. We’re happy to help you time your trip around the specific region you’re most interested in.
It varies quite a bit by itinerary — some are primarily coach- and boat-based with gentle daily walking; others incorporate full walking days between villages. Each tour page includes a clear physical grading. We’d recommend reading this before booking, and getting in touch if you’re unsure where your fitness level sits.
Not quite. A scenic journey tour is structured around landscapes and the experience of travelling through them, whereas a sightseeing tour tends to prioritise landmark visits. There’s overlap, but the organising principle is different. Scenic tours tend to move more slowly through fewer places — which for many people is a better experience.
Most of our scenic journeys include accommodation, the majority of meals, guided travel with a specialist leader, and transport throughout the itinerary. Entry fees to included sites are generally covered. Full inclusions are detailed on each tour page.
Some of our scenic tours are suitable for travellers with limited mobility, as they’re primarily vehicle-based with optional walking components. We’d encourage you to contact us before booking so we can advise on which tours work for your situation.
