Day 1 Saturday: PALERMO
Independent arrival at Hotel Mercure Palermo Excelsior, prestigious historical Hotel located in one of the city centre’ s main streets. Enjoy a welcome cocktail, dinner and overnight in your hotel.
Day 2 Sunday: PALERMO • CEFALU’ • CATANIA
After a buffet breakfast, visit the Capital of Sicily, Palermo, one of the richest towns on the Island for history and art: the Cathedral (during the Holy Mass, exterior visit only), the Palace of the Normans and its superb Palatina Chapel, the Quattro Canti, the fountain of Piazza Pretoria, the Church of Santa Caterina and its Cloister.
Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before traveling to the charming coastal town of Cefalù, a former fishing village which is also home to a breathtaking Norman Cathedral, famous for its Mosaic of Christ – a stunning Byzantine mosaic that’s considered one of the most important pieces of religious artwork in Sicily. Take a stroll to the city centre and down main street to reach the Cathedral and the medieval wash-house built in the rock.
Proceed to Catania. Accommodation, dinner and overnight at the Hotel Mercure Catania Excelsior.
Day 3 Monday: CATANIA • PIAZZA ARMERINA • CALTAGIRONE • CATANIA
After a buffet breakfast, travel to Piazza Armerina, inland of Sicily, to visit the world renowned Villa Romana del Casal. Here you will see the richest, largest and most complex collection of late Roman mosaics in the world, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before proceeding to Caltagirone. Caltagirone is one of the most lively Baroque towns in central Sicily. It’s known in Italy as The city of Sicilian ceramics due to its thousand-year-old tradition. The name itself – Caltagirone – derives from an Arabic word meaning the Castle or Fortress of the vases . The outstanding quality and creativity of Caltagirone’s ceramics is best admired in the most famous landmark of the town: the monumental Santa Maria del Monte staircase, whose 142 steps are all decorated with hand-painted ceramic tiles, using the typical colors, shapes and patterns of the most traditional pottery production and art.
You will have some free time to enjoy the many shops, before traveling back to your Hotel in Catania for dinner and overnight.
Day 4 Tuesday: CATANIA • MOUNT ETNA • TAORMINA • CATANIA
After a buffet breakfast, and weather conditions permitting, you will take an excursion to Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. Across a fascinating landscape, you will reach a height of 1900 metres to see the Sylvester Craters. From this height, you can enjoy a spectacular scenic view over the Ionian Sea.
En route to Taormina, you will stop at the village of Zafferana Etnea, The City of Honey. This is such a beautiful place and you will see where honey is produced and have the chance taste the precious nectar. You will continue to the charming city of Taormina, founded in 400 BC and also called The Pearl of the Ionian Sea. Taormina is beautifully located overlooking the sea and the peak of Mount Etna.
Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before spending some leisure time shopping for handmade lace, coral jewellery, ceramics, home-made sweets and preserves down Corso Umberto or simply walk through its tiny streets. Afterwards you will visit the fascinating Greek-Roman theatre before traveling back to your Hotel in Catania for dinner and overnight.
Day 5 Wednesday: CATANIA • SIRACUSA • NOTO • RAGUSA (Optional: visit of RAGUSA IBLA by night)
Enjoy a buffet breakfast before departing to Syracuse to visit the most beautiful Greek colony in Sicily. You will visit the archaeological park Neapolis, including the famous Latomie of the Paradise, the Greek Theatre and the Dyonisios Ear.
You will also visit the island of Ortigia, the small Baroque old city centre of Siracusa: here you can admire the Cathedral, which is built on the site of the Temple of Minerva, the legendary Fontana Arethusa and the Temple of Apollo.
Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before traveling to Noto in the afternoon. Noto is one of the most beautiful cities in Sicily and is renowned for the harmony and unity of its Baroque style and today declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The splendid cathedral is one of the most famous buildings in Noto.
Subsequently, you will proceed to Ragusa: accommodation and dinner at the Hotel Mediterraneo Palace. You have the option to visit Ragusa’s Historic centre – Ragusa Ibla by night. Deemed the cradle of Sicilian Baroque, with its Cathedral situated in the beautiful Piazza Duomo and the sloping area of tangled alleyways, grey stone houses is quite magnificent. (supplement on the spot; the excursion will take place with a minimum of participants). Spend overnight in Ragusa.
Day 6 Thursday: RAGUSA • MODICA • AGRIGENTO
After a buffet breakfast, travel to Modica to visit the city which is divided into two parts: Modica Bassa and Alta. Modica is also a UNESCO site and is famous for its Baroque churches and scenographic squares. You will have the opportunity to taste the famous chocolate (Xocoatl) made with ancient methods brought to Sicily with Spanish domination.
Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before traveling to Agrigento in the afternoon. Here you will visit the magnificent Valley Of Temples of Agrigento, another UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Temple of Concord, which is in almost perfectly preserved conditions, Juno and Heracles that represent the most beautiful example of the Greek Civilization in Sicily. Accommodation, dinner and overnight at Hotel Dioscuri Bay Palace.
Day 7 Friday: AGRIGENTO • SELINUNTE • MARSALA • PALERMO
After a buffet breakfast, travel to the Archaeological Park of Selinunte, the largest in the Mediterranean area with impressive Temples and the Acropolis. You will stop at a local farmhouse, famous for olive oil production.
Before lunch you have the opportunity to have an oil tasting of local olive oil. After lunch, you will continue to Marsala, a city on the West coast, famous for its production of sweet Sicilian wine. Visit the historical centre and stop at a prestigious winery, where you can enjoy a wine tasting and learn about local wine production. Proceed to Palermo. Accommodation, dinner and overnight at Hotel Mercure Palermo Excelsior.
Day 8 Saturday: PALERMO
After a buffet breakfast, end of the Tour.
