You will return to San Marco through the Mercerie; which is a vital connection between Rialto and San Marco and the main shopping street. You will be accompained by our expert guide for an hour walking tour inside the magnificent Doge’s Palace, “Palazzo Ducale”. The Palace is a magnificent combination of Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance architecture, right in the heart of Venice. It used to be the residence of the the elected ruler of the city, and his counsellors and, as such became the centre of the Venetian Empire and the seat of the Government. The Doge’s Palace was opened as a museum in 1923.
Listen to the informative guide as you pass through the Palace’s lavish chambers. You will be astonished by the stuccoed halls which display hundreds of masterpieces by Tintoretto, Titian, Veronese and Bellini. Hear about the different roles played by the Doge and his counsellors. Be entertained by our informative guide and learn the history of Venetian legends as you walk through the eerie, narrow passageways towards the prison cells and the famous Bridge of Sighs. Learn about the prisoners and of course, Casanova; perhaps Venice’s most famous and intriguing escape artist.
Lastly, visit one of the World’s most majestic cathedrals. During this tour, you will be escorted by a tour guide educated in accordance with the Curia of Venice. Enjoy a comprehensive visit of this masterpiece of unique Byzantine art with the beautiful gold mosaics and marble-inlay floors. Your guide will explain the represented biblical scenes, the history and the particulars of this ancient Basilica. You may visit the other magnificent palaces around St. Mark’s Square with the same ticket on your own after the initial tour. You can discover the way of life for the Venetians, with paintings, libraries, currency, and sculpture. You will also have the opportunity to visit the area built by Napoleon and the rooms restored for Sissi, the Empress of Austria. The entrance ticket also gives you access to the following palaces around St. Mark’s Square that you may visit by yourself: Museo Correr, Museo Archeologico Nazionale and Monumental Rooms of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana.
At the end of your activities, you will have the opportunity to do the optional tour to see the Glass Craftsman at work close to Saint Mark’s Square (20 minute tour). Please follow the instructions from our local staff. Also, be kindly aware that this optional visit could take longer than the scheduled time and that we do not recommend to participate if you have other reservations scheduled on the same day.
